Getting ready for Halloween!

Here are some pictures of the girls in their costumes! Emily is a witch, Evie is a baby penguin. We are calling her Baby Tux, after the mascot of Richard's favorite operating system, Linux! She is a little confused about the whole thing.

We still have a little more pink feather "bling" to put around her hat and the tops of her boots.

I trashed my bedroom, but I'm still cute, right, Mom? ...Mom?

More Fall Fun

Well, it was a chillier, wetter Sunday yesterday, but we still had fun! I didn't have the camera with me, so no pictures for this one.

First, we went to Stone's Apple Barn and picked some apples. Did you know that a paper grocery bag will hold over 26 pounds of apples? Poor Richard, he had to carry it. I had Evie on in my backpack carrier. She had fun pointing to the apples that she wanted, and then handing them to Daddy for me after I picked them. Emily did a good job, too. She found some trees that were just loaded with apples. We found one really beautiful, shiny red apple. Em decided that it was the Snow White apple, but she ate it anyway! The old man there running the operation gave Richard advice on our apple tree in the backyard. We thought that was nice of him. After we were done, we also walked over to see the chickens and other animals. Evie kept signing "dog". She did pet a goat on the nose, and I fed Emily's apple core to the donkey. (and we made Emily recite "we don't hug the donkeys!" and she rolled her eyes at us!)

On our way home from Stone's, we saw an advertisement for Happy Hollow pick-your-own pumpkin farm. We were going to get three pumpkins - one for each girl, and one to make pumpkin bread with. Well, we ended up with 5 pumpkins, at a whopping 55 pounds! Two big ones for the girls, one little one to cook, and two tiny ones that Evie picked up and signed that she wanted. She got to ride in the wagon with the pumpkins, and also run along the paths in the pumpkin patch. At the shop where you pay for the pumpkins, they have some of those big, fan-inflated Halloween decorations. The biggest one was of Frankenstein. We all laughed when Evie pointed at it and made the "daddy" sign! Before we left, Emily and Evie got to feed the goats some bread, and watch the farmer feed them some of the cracked pumpkins. I never would have guessed that goats like pumpkins so much!

Photos from last Sunday

We really miss the warm sunny days now! It has been windy and wet and cold here this week! We had to turn the furnace on!

Emily, Evie and me! We are walking down to the river.

Here are some photos of Richard, Emily and Evie by the Mississippi. I love the one of Emily alone, gazing out over the river.

Sunday Fun

I think that yesterday was the last nice Sunday of Fall. It was warm and sunny and perfect. It's hard to believe that it's supposed to snow on Wednesday! I can already feel it getting colder tonight. There are lots of leaves blowing around on the ground outside. Emily helped me put the electric blanket on her bed, and the electric mattress pad on our bed. Evie gets footie pajamas and quilts and afghans for the first half of the night, then she gets to snuggle with us until morning.

While Evie was napping on Sunday, Richard and I got the jalapeno peppers ready to can. Half of them were from our garden, and we bought half at the farmer's market. I put a tablecloth out on the picnic table, and took my cutting board and peppers out there. Richard brought out his satellite radio and sat with me while I sliced the peppers. We ended up with 7 half pint jars of jalapeno rings, and 2 half pint jars of habaneros. My fingers still tingle a little from slicing the peppers! I think I washed my hands a half dozen times, and I am still being careful not to rub my eyes. The jars of peppers look very pretty, with the green and red jalapenos, and the bright orange habaneros.

Yesterday we took the girls to the park near our house. We could see the new playground equipment every time we drove by, so we decided to stop and play. Well, it wasn't finished yet, and was still roped off. That was a little disappointing! Em and Evie played on the older equipment, though, so we still had fun. Some of the slides are tubes instead of open slides. Evie really liked those - she would wait for someone to help her up the first step (it was really tall), then she would climb the rest of the stairs to the slide, and Emily would help her sit down and slide! She would get stuck about halfway, and then one of us would stick our heads up in the tube and call her, and she would giggle and push herself the rest of the way. She also loves to swing in the baby swings.

After the park, we drove to Buffalo ~ there is a nice little park there by the Mississippi River. It has a sandy beach and picnic tables. We saw lots of RVs and boats there. I took lots of pictures of the girls. Evie had a blast playing with the leaves ~ she was fascinated by them. Richard took her and Emily by the river and they stood and let the water wash over their feet. Evie wasn't too happy about that. Then, I sat her down to play in the sand. That was a bad idea! She cried and cried until I sat down and put her on my lap. She would not touch the sand, but she would hold the rocks and shells that I gave her. If she dropped them, she wouldn't pick them up out of the sand herself ~ she wanted me to do it! I wonder what she will do when we take her there in the summer to do a little wading?

New photos

I just put a bunch of new photos, mostly of the girls, on our online photo album. You can get to it over on the right hand side under links.

It's a Muh-mergency!

Evie's best friend in the whole world is Muh, her special Pink Bunny from Emily. Her favorite sign is bunny, her favorite word is Muh. She wants Muh when she is tired or cranky or sad or scared. She wants Muh to come with us in the car and in the stroller and sometimes in the shopping cart. I have tried to put a stop to Muh at the dinner table because Evie likes to hug her in between bites. (Muh wears a lot of sweet potatoes and squash!) Every once in a while, I have to quietly send Muh through the delicate cycle on the washer. I am always afraid that she won't come out in one piece!

This evening we went to parent teacher conferences at Em's school. (She is getting all A's and B's, and is doing really well!) We were in a hurry, so Muh got left at home. After we got home, Evie had her bottle, we put on pajamas, and got ready to rockabye.

Suddenly, we realized that Muh was missing! Evie started shouting "Muh! Muh!", louder and louder. (Richard wonders if she expects Muh to answer!) We looked in the living room, in the kitchen, and even in the bathroom. Richard finally found Muh in our bedroom. He was the hero! Evie grabbed Muh, hugged her, and made the sweet little sigh that means she is happy to have Muh to hold. Whew. The Muh-mergency was finally over.

Some pictures of Evie and Muh:

Alas, poor Muh often feels the other side of toddler love. Evie loves to toss her on the floor while we're rocking at night so I have to pick her up. She also likes to toss Muh out of the stroller or shopping cart. We are always sure to keep Evie's window in the car rolled up so Muh doesn't get tossed out onto the road!

Adoption ramblings. Just skip if you want happy fluffy bunny thoughts, because you won't find them here.

I was going to write a whole post here about some problems I've been hearing about lately in the China adoption community. I don't know if these things happen in other international adoption programs or not. I just don't think that anyone's mind would be changed by what I have to say.

It is very depressing to know that there are people out there who would reject a referral or disrupt an adoption based on things like appearance or age.

I think that some people need to wake up and realize that adoption isn't about them ~ it's about finding a family for a child. I am so grateful that someone thought that we would be a good family for a child, and for Evie in particular.

Richard says I should just stop reading all these stories, because they just make me mad. I think he's probably right. I'm going to bed now.
