First Week Home

Today is Thursday, and we got home last Thursday, so we've been home one week!

Evie seems to be doing pretty well. She is warming up to Ralphie (the dog) and loves Bigfoot the cat. She is not friends with Cleo the cat, but not scared of her, either. (Evie petted Cleo, Cleo popped Evie, and Evie yelled and popped Cleo back! Now they mostly stay away from each other, but sometimes Evie will yell at Cleo!) She also likes to yell at the bunny, and beat on her cage to make noise. Poor Bunbun will be moving upstairs with Emily soon!

We have started teaching Evie signs. Sometimes she will pat her leg for Ralph or "dog", but she loves to make the sign for "cat"/Bigfoot. (she won't make it for Cleo, though!) Instead of the drawing whiskers motion, she almost pokes her eye, then points away from her face really quickly. It is cute! We've also started "milk". She usually will wave her fist, then point at the cup.

Evie saw our doctor today. He said she is doing well - almost at the 50th percentile for Chinese girls, and off the low end of the charts for American girls! He is not worried, though. He wants us to start whole milk in her bottle, and to keep on feeding her whatever she wants! He thinks we should wean to a sippy cup sometime, but she needs more practice with them. She can't suck, so we have to get the Nuby soft spout cups that she can chew on to get the liquid out. She also doesn't like it when doctors use the stethoscope, and he apparently took too long listening to her back, so she whacked him with her pink bunny! He thought it was funny. He is impressed with her lip repair. We got a referral to the specialist for her cleft palate, and our appointment is on the 7th of September.

I have noticed since we've been home that she doesn't do as many of the self-soothing behaviors that she did when we first met her. On the way back to our hotel from first meeting her, she sucked her thumb and pulled her shirt up to rub on her face. When we gave her the pink bear blanket, she would rub it and pick at it before sleep. She still sucks her thumb, and will still rub her animal or blanket on her face or hand, but not to the degree that she once did. She will also share - she's rubbed her blanket and bunny's ears on my cheek many times. She especially likes to get Daddy and Emily with the blanket after she's gotten it all slobbery! She also doesn't panic and fall apart when you take the (empty) bottle away. She's even learned that Mama and Daddy hold the bottle, but she can hold our other hand if she wants.

She is still really clingy to me. I hope that will change, and that her Daddy's feelings won't get too hurt by it. I can tell if we've been out too long, because she starts to bury her face in my shoulder and try to get as close as possible. Still, I would like to hear my name said with a smile sometimes, instead of a whined or cried "MA-ma-Ma-ma-ma-ma..."

She is having some troubles falling asleep. She won't fall asleep in our bed, so we do put her in her crib. Sometimes she ends up with us during the night, though. Tonight she probably played in her bed for half an hour to 45 minutes before she finally fell asleep. For a while I was in there reading in the rocking chair. I finally went to do dishes, and she was mad! She cried for a couple minutes (I went back in to give her back her bunny and blanket that she threw out, and I rubbed her tummy and head) but she finally settled down. It is hard when you know that they are tired and really need to sleep, but they don't want to!

It is still hard to keep clothes on Evie. I need to go upstairs and dig through Em's old 12 month clothes. Pants fall off of her little bottom, so she's been living in dresses and jumpsuits. (we have some really cute ones that Em only wore a time or two before she outgrew them!) What I really need to do is get out the sewing machine and make some things 18 month length, but 12 month sized around! (who is taking bets on whether or not I will be able to sew with a toddler around? like my family says, I need Sewing for Dummies!)

Evie has started playing peek a boo, and likes it when I ask "Where is Evie? Where is Haihong? Honghong? Mei Gui Hua?" If I throw in a "Where is Mama?" or "Where is Bigfoot?" she really gets the giggles! She is also making what Richard and Emily call the Home Alone face. She especially likes to do it when she's being a bit naughty, as it gives us all the giggles and we forget why she's in trouble! She also has learned the word NO. She will tell me NO, shake her finger at me, and then grab for my glasses. We also hear NO right before she digs in the trash or tries to eat Ralphie's food, etc. She also gets the funniest face when she says NO ~ think the pinched face of an old-timey schoolmarm... it is hilarious!

She loves the bath, and is fascinated by the spout where the water comes out. She loves to hold her hands underneath and feel the water falling. When I turn the water off, she tries to look up in there to find out where it comes from. Sometimes she tries to turn the water back on by herself.

I don't think I've posted here about the Kung Fu story. It made my Mom and Dad laugh, though! At our hotel, we got about 50 channels. Well, about 10 of the channels show those cheesey old Kung Fu movies - the comedy, 3 stooge type ones. Evie ignored the tv the whole time, except if there was music to dance to or one of these Kung Fu movies on. She would instantly get glued to the tv. It was so funny! We are wondering if she watched them with her foster father? We will probably never know...

We will try to go to the parade and maybe the carnival this weekend, so I hope to have some more pictures to post then. Good night, everyone!

Evie wants to type!

k ;oZ

She likes to type on the keyboard and use the mouse, and talk on the phone. So far she's said "hi" and giggled to people.

We're Home!

And tired! Too much time sitting on flights, too much time waiting in lines. But it was all worth it!

Evie is smart and funny and beautiful, even with her freshly shaven head. (It's a boy's haircut! That's what everyone tells me, anyway!) She has Daddy wrapped around her finger. Sometimes she plays well with Emily, and sometimes she pinches and pulls hair, which breaks her big sister's heart. She is definitely a Mama's girl, and usually wants only me when she's tired or hungry or cranky or scared.

She is very tiny - You can count her ribs, and each vertebra up her back. I took mostly 18 and 24 month clothes, and she swims in all of them. I had to safety pin the backs of her pants, and put onesies under her dresses. She will probably be able to wear some 12 month sizes. But, she is also a good eater. There have been times that she out-ate the grownups! She loves congee, yogurt, noodles, banana bread, and scrambled or steamed eggs. She started refusing fruit and most veggies toward the end of our stay. She loves pizza and any kind of rice, and wants to drink our tea. When we first met, she was too scared to drink from a bottle or sippy cup, so I spoon fed her formula for a couple days. She is a pro at a bottle now, and getting better at the sippy. I think it's harder because of her cleft palate.

Some of you may know that one of her special needs is scars from ant bites. Well, they are much worse than I had ever feared. My heart breaks for her and what she must have gone through. I refuse to believe that she was left near the ants deliberately, though. It has to have been an accident. Well, we had a scary moment over the bites at the physical for the visa. The doctor grabbed my hand and led me and Evie into a room with all the other docs, and they all were talking very fast in Chinese and grabbing at her arms and looking under her shirt. I thought they were going to refuse to let us have her. Finally, one of our guides came in and started translating for us, and worked everything out. It turns out that they were disagreeing over whether or not we would really want her, and what type of insects would cause bites like that. They seemed surprised that we knew about the bites ahead of time. Some Chinese people we met were surprised that we would want an "unperfect" baby (one very rude shopkeeper on Shamian Island comes to mind, and we never did go back to her shop or purchase anything from her). Most, though, were happy for us and called her a Lucky Baby.

We are so glad to be home. We tried some wonderful (and not-so-wonderful) authentic Chinese and Cantonese dishes, but I'm ashamed to say we ordered pizza from Danny's Bagels way too often. You are reading the words of someone who tried pigeon, goose, eel and squid. Richard also had the fish heads over rice. (yuck) I did find a new favorite Cantonese dish - our guide, Ann, translated it as "Fried Chicken with 3 Glasses of Wine". Let's just say Yum. And yes, McDonald's in China is pretty much the same as here.

We did a lot of shopping. We went to the Pearl market and bought the girls pearl necklaces and earrings for their weddings. We bought squeaky shoes and traditional Chinese outfits, chopsticks sets, tea and tea cups, cloisonne for Evie, an "inside painting" globe for Em, and Richard surprised me with a MahJongg set. (I'll have to learn to play it "offline"!) We went to Jordon's and bought pretty fans and a pair of red silk shoes for Em, and he did calligraphy of the girls' names for us. We borrowed a stroller from the China Doll store and did laundry and bought squeaky shoes and a Chinese dress for Emily there.

We also had time for lots of sightseeing. We saw the Guangzhou Zoo (we liked the panda, but Emily's favorite part was the little dogs in the petting zoo!) and a city park with a farm. We went to the tomb of the NanYue king, the Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall, the Chen Clan Temple/Guangdong Folk Arts Museum, the Temple of the Five Immortals, and the Guangzhou City Museum. We also went to the Six Banyans Temple and were blessed by a monk. One day, our guide Ann took us to a local shopping district - not one for tourists. It was very crowded, but very interesting. I'm glad we experienced it.

We got to visit Evie's orphanage - the Dongguan City CWI. I was imagining something out of Annie, but I was pleasantly surprised. Think hospital plus college dormitory. The Assistant Director told us that 500 children, mostly with special needs, are assigned there, but about 400 of those live in foster homes. All the older kids live in foster care, but they have teachers and a library and computer center at the CWI. He took us on a tour, and we saw lots of babies. There were several that stick in my mind - one beautiful child with bilateral cleft lip/palate, but the most amazing smile. Another was a child with dark birthmarks over most of his or her face and arms. This child and Emily seemed to form a bond - she had trouble leaving him or her behind! There were also two tiny little babies in incubators. The nannies wear pink uniforms, and the babies were all wearing pink that day, too. We got to meet the nanny who was Evie's primary caregiver for most of her stay. After much coaxing, Evie went to her for a couple pictures, but came right back to me. I was impressed by the fact that everyone seemed to know and genuinely care for Evie. We also got to meet Evie's foster father and his grown daughter, Evie's foster JieJie, or big sister. (the daughter works at the CWI, as does the foster mother, but she was not there when we visited.) We found out that Evie's foster sister is responsible for the infamous haircut! We also met CongCong, a little boy from the CWI who was Evie's foster brother. He was a sweetie, and a real ham - blowing kisses for the camera. Evie lived with this family for about 3 months, but was returned to the CWI shortly before we met her. After our tour, we went out to eat with the Assistant Director and Evie's foster sister, and another woman. They were very nice, and laughed at us trying to eat with chopsticks! The foster sister showed me how to feed Evie tea from one of the big Chinese-style spoons.

I'm sure there is so much more of our story to tell, but I am tired and my brain is shutting down. I'll try to write more later and post some pics, too.

Evie

We are in China and have Evie. We are so blessed. She is so tiny - she swims in the clothes we brought her. She has the giggles right now because her Dad is tickling her. She will eat anything we give her, but we have had to feed her formula with a spoon because she has trouble with a bottle and sippy cup.

China is beautiful and we have met so many wonderful people.

Our time is almost up, so I will try to write more later.

We miss you all!

Super Stressful Day

Oh crud. There was a mixup with our homestudy and the Chicago CIS. Hopefully we got it fixed (although my call was never returned by CIS). I am still a little freaked out. I don't know what will happen if it doesn't get fixed. Our agency is telling us to go ahead and book flights, and have a great time in China. Hopefully that means they are sure it will all work out. (but in the meantime, I want to scream!)

Richard finished painting Evie's room, and Emily was his big helper. It looks great. We will probably put it all together tomorrow. I still need to finish the curtains, but that might have to wait. I'll try to post pictures when it is done.

I have been doing load after load of laundry. I have been making packing lists, shopping lists, lists of things to do. I will probably need to make a list of where to find all my lists.

Richard has found us plane tickets, and booked our hotel room, guides, translators, etc. That was a scary number to whip out the credit card for!

Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day. Oh, and I put a link to the Weather Underground site for Guangzhou over there under links. Yay, warm and muggy! We'll feel right at home!

Oh-My-Wow!!!

We already have our consulate appointment! We have to be in China by next Thursday at noon to meet Evie! That means we might leave in a week, 7 days, 168 hours, well you get the picture.

We will be joining a group of families from our agency who are also adopting. Their children are in a different province than Evie is, but we will meet up for the second half of our stay.

I have so much to do! Why am I still sitting here on the computer?

Love you all!
